The historic city of Madison is an easy day trip from Atlanta, offering an attractive downtown area, beautiful architecture, several house museums and other attractions, and a small-town atmosphere.

The distance between Atlanta and Madison is only around 60 miles by road, or around an hour or so in reasonable traffic. Bus service between the two cities is also available, with similar journey length, although the travel times unfortunately do not lend themselves to day trip travel. Train services aren’t available.

Shuttle transportation is available between Atlanta Airport and Madison, with numerous daily trips in each direction. A taxi is another, more expensive, alternative for this route.

The distance from Downtown Atlanta to Madison is around 61 miles, taking the I-20 out of Atlanta and following it the whole way to Madison. After arriving, a short detour takes you to downtown Madison.

If you are coming from (or traveling to) other parts of Atlanta, other routes may be faster.

In ideal traffic, the trip from Atlanta to Madison takes a little less than an hour. Typical drive time is around an hour or so, but in heavy traffic, the journey could take an hour and a half or more.

Bus services from Atlanta to Madison are available through Greyhound and its regional affiliate Southeastern Stages. Megabus do not currently have a stop in Madison.

There is 1 daily bus from Atlanta to Madison, and another daily bus from Madison to Atlanta. You can expect to pay around $15 in each direction for an economy ticket for this journey with advance purchase ($30 round trip), or $20 each way closer to the date of travel ($40 round trip).

Atlanta’s Greyhound station is conveniently located in the Downtown area (232 Forsyth Street SW), with public transport to other parts of the city available via train (with a MARTA station adjacent to the Greyhound station) or city bus, with stops for several routes within a block or two of the station.

Madison’s bus station is at Madison Chevron gas station (1990 Eatonton Road), just under 3 miles from downtown Madison. Public transport to downtown and other area locations is not currently available, so a taxi or rideshare service will usually be the best choice for completing your journey.

A taxi between downtown Atlanta and Madison will cost around $125 excluding tip. Rides from other areas of Atlanta may cost $10-$20 more or less than this fare, depending on which side of the city you are traveling from. A taxi to or from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) will cost around $135, excluding tip.

Shuttle From Madison To Atlanta Airport

Groome Transportation provide shuttle services between Atlanta Airport (ATL) and Madison (on their Atlanta Airport-Augusta route). The shuttle departs Madison or Atlanta Airport every hour and fifteen minutes over a 20-hour period. Reservations are required.

The adult fare is $45 one-way, or $90 round trip. Pets can also travel, for $15 each way. The drop-off and collection point in Madison is at 2050 Eatonton Road, more than 3 miles from downtown Madison. You will usually need to use a local taxi or rideshare service for this portion of the journey.
